Trump Pauses 50% Canada Tariffs After Last Minute Deal

Trump has paused the planned 50% Canada tariffs after the United States and Canada reached a last minute agreement just hours before the measures were due to take effect. The tariffs, which were scheduled to begin at midnight, have been delayed for three days while both governments finalize the details of the proposed deal. The planned 50% Canada tariffs would have applied to around $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. The measures covered a range of products, with the White House previously listing goods including wine, hockey sticks and cement among those affected. The tariffs would have applied to covered products regardless of their status under the United States Mexico Canada Agreement.

Trump announced the pause after speaking with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying an agreement had been reached subject to the completion of the necessary documents. Carney confirmed that substantial progress had been made during the negotiations. However, he also stressed that important work remained before the agreement could be considered complete. The temporary breakthrough follows weeks of intense negotiations over trade issues between the two neighboring countries. U.S. officials have indicated that the proposed agreement could include broader market access for American goods, economic security commitments and cooperation on digital trade. The full terms, however, have not yet been publicly released.

Several sensitive issues remain part of the wider trade dispute. These include access to Canadian markets for American dairy and other products, as well as disagreements involving vehicles and trade rules. The threat of the new tariffs had raised concerns among businesses on both sides of the border, particularly in industries that depend heavily on cross border trade. Trump also suggested that the Keystone XL pipeline project could potentially be revived as part of future discussions. No specific details have been provided, and it remains unclear whether the project will become part of a final agreement. Its possible return would nevertheless add another major element to the negotiations between Washington and Ottawa.

For now, Canada has avoided the immediate introduction of the new 50% Canada tariffs. However, the three day pause puts both governments under pressure to finalize an agreement quickly. The coming days will determine whether this last minute breakthrough leads to a lasting trade deal or whether the threat of tariffs returns once again.
