Iran has launched missile attacks against U.S. military positions in the Middle East, marking a new escalation in the confrontation between Tehran and Washington. The attacks came after U.S. forces carried out strikes against Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran describing its response as retaliation for what it called American aggression. Iranian state media reported that missiles were launched toward American military targets, while regional authorities and U.S. officials worked to assess the extent of the attacks.
The latest escalation follows a period of relative calm between the United States and Iran. U.S. forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island after American officials said Iranian forces were preparing activities that could threaten commercial shipping in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The United States described its operation as limited and focused on preventing a potential threat to maritime traffic. Iran subsequently responded with missile attacks against U.S. positions in Jordan, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it had targeted two American bases, King Hussein and Al Azraq.
Jordanian authorities said that several incoming missiles were intercepted, with the country’s military reporting that eight missiles were destroyed in its airspace. At the same time, reports emerged of Iranian attacks or attempted attacks involving other U.S. military facilities in the region. The situation remains particularly sensitive because American forces are stationed at multiple strategic locations across the Middle East, meaning further attacks could quickly widen the confrontation. The United Arab Emirates, for example, denied reports that Al Minhad Air Base had been targeted after Iranian claims of an attack, demonstrating that information surrounding the latest strikes remains contested.
The renewed fighting is also raising concerns far beyond the immediate military confrontation. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important routes for energy shipments, meaning any prolonged disruption could affect global oil supplies and prices. Oil prices have already risen following the latest exchange of fire, while governments and markets are closely watching whether the confrontation remains limited or develops into a wider regional conflict. With the United States threatening further action and Iran continuing to warn that it will respond to attacks, the latest strikes have once again placed the Middle East at the center of international security and economic concerns.
