A passenger train derailed near the railway station in Đurđevac on Wednesday morning, causing a temporary disruption to rail traffic in the area. The incident happened at around 9:10 a.m. at the Đurđevac railway station, near the crossing on Vinogradska Street. Fortunately, no passengers or railway staff were injured in the incident. Police officers and firefighters were quickly sent to the scene, while authorities began investigating what caused the train to leave the tracks.
The train was traveling on the Zagreb Main Station to Osijek route when one of its bogies derailed. According to information released by HŽ Infrastructure, there were 36 passengers on board at the time. Although the incident caused concern, everyone on the train was safely transported to their destinations using another train. Three firefighting vehicles were also sent to the scene, while police began an on-site investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the derailment.
The incident has also affected railway traffic in the surrounding area. The railway section between Kloštar and Koprivnica has been temporarily closed while repairs and an inspection of the tracks are carried out. During the closure, passengers are being transported by replacement buses along the affected section. Authorities have not yet announced how long the disruption will last, as the duration will depend on the condition of the railway infrastructure and the progress of the investigation and necessary repairs.
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation, and officials are expected to provide more information after the police inspection and technical assessment are completed. The incident comes less than a month after another serious railway accident occurred in the same Croatian county, when a passenger and freight train collided near Škrinjari on August 8, injuring 25 people. In Đurđevac, however, the immediate outcome was far less serious, with all 36 passengers safely evacuated and no injuries reported. Attention will now focus on determining what caused the train to derail and ensuring that the affected railway section can safely return to normal operation.
