The United Kingdom is launching its first military space squadron dedicated to defending British satellites and countering hostile activity in orbit.
The Royal Air Force’s new No. III Space Effects Squadron will protect satellites used for military communications, mobile phone connectivity, navigation and early warnings of incoming missile attacks.
The unit will bring together specialists from across the British Armed Forces and use advanced technology to disrupt, degrade and deny hostile actions targeting UK interests in space.
UK Military Space Squadron Will Counter Orbital Threats
The new squadron will use capabilities including electronic warfare to respond directly to threats against British satellites.
It will support both defensive and offensive space operations and expand as new technology and military capabilities enter service.
The UK already operates two related units. No. I Space Operations Squadron monitors activity in orbit, while No. II Space Warning Squadron detects and provides warnings about potential threats.
Unlike those units, No. III Squadron will be responsible for acting against hostile activity.
The squadron’s responsibilities will include developing countermeasures against anti-satellite weapons and strengthening Britain’s ability to maintain access to space during a conflict.
Satellites Support Civilian and Military Systems
Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, chief of the UK’s Royal Air Force, announced the unit at the first UK Space Power Conference.
He said space is no longer simply supporting military operations but has become an area of direct strategic competition where military advantages can be gained or lost.
Modern satellites support communication networks, military operations, missile warnings, navigation systems and numerous services used in everyday life.
The new UK military space squadron forms part of the government’s broader Space Strategy, which focuses on protecting national and allied interests in orbit.
UK Space Command, established in 2021, already oversees British military space operations, personnel development and space-related equipment programs.
The new squadron will strengthen the country’s ability to respond to growing threats as more governments expand their military capabilities in space.
