President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova met with representatives of the United Macedonians Organization of Canada to discuss stronger diaspora participation in Macedonia’s political, economic and social life.
The organization was represented by its president, Risto Durlovski, and member Dusko Jankov.
They briefed the president on the achievements, challenges and proposals of Macedonians living in Canada, including their involvement in the country’s economic, political, educational, scientific and cultural affairs.
Both sides agreed that the Macedonian diaspora in Canada remains an inseparable part of the country’s national fabric.
Diaspora Seeks Greater Institutional Participation
Durlovski and Jankov expressed interest in greater diaspora participation in parliamentary and presidential elections.
They also called for closer communication with the country’s Emigration Agency and more direct institutional involvement in decisions concerning Macedonians living abroad.
Among their proposals was consultation with the diaspora when Macedonia nominates ambassadors and consuls to serve in Canada.
The representatives emphasized that diaspora communities should have a voice in decisions that directly affect their interests and relationship with their homeland.
Macedonian Diaspora in Canada Invited to Join New Council
Siljanovska-Davkova informed the representatives about the adopted National Diaspora Strategy, describing it as a step toward building stronger connections through different forms of cooperation.
She also discussed ongoing preparations to establish a Diaspora Council within the president’s office.
The president encouraged the United Macedonians Organization of Canada to nominate a representative to participate in the council.
Durlovski and Jankov noted that digitalization and artificial intelligence are reducing the practical impact of geographical distance.
According to the representatives, younger generations of the Macedonian diaspora are showing growing interest in learning about, studying, working and living in the country of their parents and ancestors.
At the end of the meeting, they invited Siljanovska-Davkova to visit Canada and speak directly with members of the Macedonian community about the issues affecting them.
