SpaceX’s Starlink is expanding its presence in commercial aviation, with American Airlines significantly increasing its commitment to satellite-based internet connectivity.
SpaceX had previously signed an agreement with American Airlines covering 500 aircraft. The latest announcement more than doubles that number, as the airline’s mainline fleet includes more than 1,030 narrow-body and wide-body aircraft.
The agreement could significantly improve the onboard experience for passengers, providing access to fast and reliable satellite Wi-Fi while traveling. American Airlines carries more than 165 million passengers annually, potentially bringing the service to a large number of travelers.
The move also signals a shift in the airline’s connectivity strategy. Last year, American Airlines reached an agreement with AT&T to provide high-speed Wi-Fi access to members of its AAdvantage loyalty program.
Meanwhile, SpaceX continues to expand Starlink’s presence across the aviation industry. Although SpaceX lost a deal with Delta Air Lines to Amazon’s Project Kuiper earlier this year, Starlink has secured agreements with numerous other carriers.
Amazon’s satellite internet service is not expected to begin aviation operations until 2028, while Starlink is already serving commercial airlines. United Airlines, for example, has equipped hundreds of aircraft with Starlink connectivity.
Starlink has secured partnerships with dozens of airlines worldwide, reflecting growing interest in satellite internet as carriers look to offer passengers more reliable connectivity at cruising altitude.
With American Airlines expanding its commitment, satellite-powered internet is becoming an increasingly important part of the future of air travel.
