Kimberly Guilfoyle is stepping down as U.S. ambassador to Greece after the White House asked her to resign amid allegations that she sought a $100,000 payment from a political donor to cover her personal credit card bill.

On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed that the administration had asked Guilfoyle to resign, saying she had been a “wonderful asset to the team” and wishing her well.

The decision follows a report by The Wall Street Journal alleging that Guilfoyle asked businessman and Trump supporter Eric Deters to pay $100,000 toward her American Express bill in July 2025, shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing for the ambassadorial position.

According to Deters, the requested payment was connected to his efforts to obtain access to senior Trump administration officials. He said he did not make the payment. The allegations have raised questions about potential conflicts of interest and the boundaries between political relationships and official government responsibilities.

Guilfoyle has denied wrongdoing. Her representatives have disputed the allegations, arguing that money discussed with Deters related to unpaid fees for appearances and speaking engagements predating her nomination. Guilfoyle also stated that she intends to defend her reputation.

The departure comes after President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was considering firing Guilfoyle, adding that the administration was “not happy” with the situation.

Guilfoyle, a former television personality and prosecutor, was nominated by Trump to serve as U.S. ambassador to Greece in 2025. She is also known for her previous engagement to Donald Trump Jr.

The allegations have placed renewed attention on ethics standards for public officials and the importance of transparency in dealings with political donors. No conclusion of legal wrongdoing has been established by the allegations alone.
