Eight years after her death, Milena Dravić remains one of the most celebrated actresses in Yugoslav cinema. The Serbian-born star appeared in dozens of films, won an award at the Cannes Film Festival and shared the screen with Brad Pitt early in his Hollywood career.

Dravić died on October 14, 2018, in Belgrade, aged 78. Born on October 5, 1940, she built a career that lasted nearly six decades.

Her performances made her a familiar face throughout the former Yugoslavia, while her relationship with actor Dragan Nikolić became one of the region’s best-known love stories.

Milena Dravić Played Brad Pitt’s Mother in an Early Film

Long before Brad Pitt became a Hollywood star, he traveled to Yugoslavia to film The Dark Side of the Sun.

The movie, directed by Božidar Bota Nikolić, was filmed on the Montenegrin coast in 1988.

Pitt played Rick Clayton, a young American suffering from a rare skin condition. His family takes him to the Adriatic coast in search of treatment.

Dravić portrayed his mother.

The film gave Pitt one of his earliest leading roles, years before his international breakthrough. Although filming took place in 1988, the movie did not reach audiences until 1997.

For Dravić, working with the future Hollywood star was one moment in an already established career.

She made her film debut in Vrata ostaju otvorena in 1959 and gained wider recognition through Prekobrojna in 1962.

Other notable films included Kozara, Jutro, Battle of Neretva and Zona Zamfirova.

Her international recognition grew in 1980 when she won the Best Supporting Actress Award at Cannes for her performance in Goran Paskaljević’s Special Treatment.

The award was shared with Italian actress Carla Gravina.

According to the official Cannes Film Festival archive, Dravić received the honor for her role in the Yugoslav production.

Her work earned numerous other awards, establishing her as a leading figure in the country’s film industry.

Her Love Story With Dragan Nikolić Lasted 45 Years

Beyond her film career, Milena Dravić was known for her marriage to fellow actor Dragan Nikolić.

The couple met in 1969 while filming Horoskop. Dravić was already a recognized actress, while Nikolić was still building his career.

They married in December 1971 in an unusually simple ceremony.

Instead of organizing a large celebration, they visited the Vračar municipal office during a lunch break while working on a television production.

The story became one of the most frequently remembered details of their relationship.

Their marriage lasted 45 years, until Nikolić’s death on March 11, 2016.

The couple also worked together professionally. They hosted the popular Yugoslav entertainment program Obraz uz obraz and appeared in television productions, including Povratak otpisanih.

Their chemistry on screen made them recognizable to generations of viewers.

Nikolić once explained that what attracted him to Dravić was her natural personality and the feeling that he had known her all his life.

Their relationship remained an important part of their public lives, although both maintained successful careers independently.

Dravić continued acting after her husband’s death.

When she died in October 2018, audiences across the former Yugoslavia remembered her through the characters she portrayed and the films that shaped the region’s cultural history.

Eight years later, her legacy remains visible in Yugoslav cinema, from internationally recognized dramas to beloved television productions.

And for Hollywood audiences, there is another remarkable connection: before Brad Pitt became one of the world’s biggest movie stars, he played the son of Milena Dravić.
