October 14 marks one year since the death of Vladimir Blažev, better known as Pancho, a member of the popular Macedonian music duo DNK. He died in 2025 at the age of 46, seven months after suffering severe injuries in the devastating Kočani nightclub fire.
Pancho was among the victims of the March 16, 2025, fire at the Pulse nightclub in Kočani, Macedonia. The tragedy claimed 63 lives, including his longtime musical partner Andrej Gjorgjieski and several members of their band.
A year after his death, Pancho is remembered for the music he created, his generosity and his devotion to his family and friends.
Pancho and DNK: More Than Two Decades of Music
Born on July 29, 1979, in Skopje, Vladimir Blažev developed a passion for music during his teenage years. He began performing with OK Band before forming DNK with Andrej Gjorgjieski in 2001.
Over the following two decades, DNK became one of Macedonia’s most recognizable musical acts.
Their songs, including Blagodaram Odnapred, Pazi Dete, Navlečen na Tebe and Ako Utre Me Nema, became familiar to generations of listeners.
Alongside his work with DNK, Pancho performed as a DJ under the name Shorty.
Despite his popularity, he never considered himself superior to others.
In an interview with Macedonian newspaper Sloboden Pečat, Pancho explained that he and Andrej always saw themselves as ordinary people.
“We are people like everyone else, and I don’t see why we should place ourselves above anyone,” he said.
His commitment to music remained unchanged throughout his career.
“If I were born again, I would choose the same thing,” he once said.
Pancho and Andrej were also known for participating in charity events and supporting children and families in need.
Friends and colleagues frequently described them as approachable people who were willing to help others without expecting anything in return.
Remembering Pancho One Year After the Kočani Fire
Behind his public career, Pancho was a husband and father of two sons, Andreja and Marjan.
His family remained one of the most important parts of his life.
Following his death, Macedonian singer Elena Risteska, a close friend, recalled that Pancho had grown up without his father.
“His greatest fear was leaving his children without a father, just as he had grown up,” she told Sloboden Pečat.
His friendships also continued to leave a mark after his passing.
In June 2026, former NBA player Pero Antić, one of Pancho’s longtime friends, accompanied his older son Andreja to his school graduation celebration.
The gesture was widely shared as a tribute to their friendship.
Pancho’s life changed on March 16, 2025, when a fire broke out during DNK’s performance at the Pulse nightclub in Kočani.
Andrej Gjorgjieski and several members of the band’s team died in the disaster. Pancho survived the initial fire but suffered severe injuries.
After seven months of treatment, he died on October 14, 2025.
He was laid to rest in Skopje on October 16, the same date on which Macedonian singer Toše Proeski had died in a road accident 18 years earlier.
One of DNK’s most emotional songs, Ako Utre Me Nema (If I’m Gone Tomorrow), has taken on particular meaning for fans following the tragedy.
Pancho wrote its lyrics, and the song remains part of the musical legacy he created with Andrej.
One year after his death, Vladimir Blažev is remembered as a musician whose songs accompanied generations of Macedonians, including those living abroad.
For his family, friends and fans, his legacy extends beyond the stage. It lives on through his music and the memories of those who knew him.
