A glowing “space jellyfish” appeared in the sky over North Georgia on Tuesday morning, October 13, surprising residents across the Atlanta area. The unusual sight followed a SpaceX rocket launch from Florida.

The bright cloud spread across the sky before sunrise. Its shape resembled a giant jellyfish, with a glowing center and long, thin trails.

People across North Georgia captured photos of the display. FOX 5 Atlanta also shared images from viewers who witnessed the event.

Although the cloud looked mysterious, scientists have a simple explanation for the phenomenon.

SpaceX Rocket Creates Rare Sky Display

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, early Tuesday morning.

The launch was scheduled for 6:33 a.m. As the rocket climbed, it released exhaust gases high above Earth.

Those gases expanded in the thin upper atmosphere and formed a large cloud.

Meanwhile, sunlight reached the rocket’s exhaust even though the ground remained dark. The light illuminated the expanding plume and created the glowing effect.

From the ground, the cloud looked like a floating jellyfish.

The phenomenon sometimes appears during rocket launches shortly before sunrise or after sunset.

These conditions allow sunlight to reach the high-altitude plume while observers below remain in darkness.

Why Does a Space Jellyfish Appear?

A space jellyfish is not a living creature or an object from space. It is a visual effect that occurs when sunlight illuminates rocket exhaust.

At high altitudes, the surrounding air pressure is extremely low. As a result, the exhaust spreads much farther than it would near the ground.

Water vapor in the exhaust can also form tiny ice particles. These particles help scatter sunlight and make the cloud visible across a wide area.

The expanding gases create the jellyfish’s rounded shape. Meanwhile, trails of exhaust can resemble its long tentacles.

The display depends on the timing of the launch, the rocket’s altitude and the position of the sun.

That combination makes the sight unusual, although similar displays have appeared after previous rocket launches.

For residents across North Georgia, Tuesday’s launch created an unexpected spectacle before the start of the day.

The glowing cloud eventually faded as the exhaust spread through the atmosphere.
