The wait is over. After months of speculation, major trades, coaching changes and preseason games, the NBA returns on Tuesday with three highly anticipated matchups. Opening night features the defending champions, a newly assembled superstar team, a two-time MVP and some of the league’s most exciting young players.
The 2026–27 NBA season begins with a tripleheader featuring several of the biggest storylines in basketball. The action starts with a meeting between the Eastern Conference’s top two teams from last season, continues with the defending champion New York Knicks hosting a star-studded Philadelphia 76ers team, and concludes with a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals.

Detroit Pistons vs. Boston Celtics
The new NBA season opens with two teams that finished first and second in the Eastern Conference standings last season. Detroit claimed the top spot but fell short of its championship ambitions in the playoffs, while Boston underwent one of the league’s biggest roster changes during the offseason.
The Celtics are now without Jaylen Brown, the former Finals MVP who helped deliver a championship to Boston. Previous discussions about whether Brown and Jayson Tatum could coexist as the team’s leading stars have given way to a new reality: Boston is now firmly Tatum’s team.
Tuesday’s opener will offer an early look at how Tatum handles the role of undisputed first option and how much support he has around him. Paul George brings experience, versatility and additional scoring, but replacing everything Brown contributed at both ends of the floor will be a difficult task.
Detroit, meanwhile, has retained the core that powered its impressive regular season. Cade Cunningham remains the engine of the team’s offense, while the prolonged uncertainty surrounding Jalen Duren’s contract has been resolved, with the center staying in Detroit.
The Pistons have enough defensive talent to challenge for the top of the Eastern Conference again. However, they still need additional offensive solutions when opponents manage to slow Cunningham down. Boston should provide an immediate test of whether Detroit has addressed that weakness.
New York Knicks vs. Philadelphia 76ers
The marquee matchup of opening night takes place at Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks will raise their championship banner before beginning their title defense against Philadelphia.
LeBron James and Jaylen Brown are set to make their debuts for the 76ers against the reigning champions. Alongside Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe and Joel Embiid, they give Philadelphia an impressive collection of talent at nearly every position, with several players capable of taking over a game.
The biggest question is not whether Philadelphia has enough individual talent. On paper, the team may have as much as anyone in the league. The challenge will be distributing the ball, defining responsibilities and determining how quickly its star players can transform an impressive collection of names into a cohesive unit.
They could hardly ask for a more demanding first test.
New York has retained almost all of its championship core. The players understand their roles, and Jalen Brunson has already demonstrated that he can lead a title-winning team.
The departure of Mitchell Robinson has cost the Knicks some energy, rebounding and rim protection. Andre Drummond will be expected to help fill that gap.
There is also uncertainty surrounding unfinished contract negotiations involving Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart. However, the Knicks have already shown they can put individual concerns aside when the team’s objectives are at stake.
Philadelphia may have more star power on paper. New York has the system, chemistry and championship experience.
Opening night will offer an early indication of just how much difference there is between assembling talent and building a team.
San Antonio Spurs vs. Oklahoma City Thunder
The final game of the night brings a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals.
Oklahoma City finished the regular season with the NBA’s best record, but San Antonio won their seven-game playoff series to advance to the NBA Finals.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander enters the new campaign as a two-time MVP. Chet Holmgren remains one of the league’s most promising young defensive players, while Jalen Williams is expected to return as another major offensive contributor after recovering from injury.
However, Oklahoma City no longer has the same depth. The departures of Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe have opened up significant minutes, forcing head coach Mark Daigneault to identify new reliable contributors in the rotation.
San Antonio begins the season looking to recover from a painful defeat to New York in the NBA Finals. Victor Wembanyama enters his next campaign with another year of experience and is among the leading candidates for the MVP award. Further development is expected from Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle.
De’Aaron Fox is also expected to begin the season in much better health than he had during the previous playoffs.
Tobias Harris will miss the opener with a calf injury, but his addition remains important for San Antonio over the longer term. He brings veteran experience and defensive versatility at power forward, addressing an area the Spurs needed to strengthen.
Previous meetings have suggested that San Antonio has the tools to challenge Oklahoma City’s system. The Spurs won four of the five regular-season meetings between the teams and then eliminated the Thunder in the playoffs. Oklahoma City now has an immediate opportunity to change the direction of that rivalry.
The Thunder will be looking to reestablish themselves as the West’s dominant team, while San Antonio will try to show that its postseason success was no accident.
A Season That Begins With Major Questions
The NBA’s opening night brings together last season’s conference leaders, the defending champions and one of the league’s most intriguing new superstar lineups.
Can Detroit build on its regular-season dominance? Will Philadelphia’s individual talent translate into team chemistry? And can Oklahoma City regain control of a rivalry that San Antonio dominated in last season’s biggest moments?
The first night will not provide definitive answers, but it should offer an early indication of which teams made the most of the offseason.
The 2026–27 NBA season is officially underway, and the race for the championship begins with three compelling matchups.
