A black bear named Oso has been crowned “Mama Bear of 2026” in Alaska after bravely defending her cubs from another bear, earning recognition from the US Forest Service.

The protective mother, known for her unusual mullet-like hairstyle and distinctive white chest marking, received the award for her efforts to keep her young safe in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest.

Oso’s remarkable story has captured attention as an example of the challenges mother bears face while raising their cubs in the wild.

Oso’s Brave Encounter With Another Bear

The incident occurred when another female bear, known as Scuba Sue, approached Oso and her three cubs.

Sensing a possible threat, Oso directed her cubs to climb a nearby tree before confronting the approaching bear.

She then charged at Scuba Sue, successfully defending her young.

According to the US Forest Service, caring for three cubs while living among numerous other bears required constant attention.

The agency highlighted Oso’s protective behavior as an example of how aggressively female bears may respond when they believe their offspring are in danger.

Oso has been observed in the Anan area of southeastern Alaska since 2022.

She is easily recognizable thanks to a white marking on her chest resembling the letter “I.”

She also has a distinctive patch of fur on her head that develops into a hairstyle resembling a mullet by late summer.

Her unusual appearance has made her one of the more recognizable bears in the area.

Oso’s name is associated with the white marking on her chest, which resembles a bone. The Italian word osso means bone, while the Spanish word oso means bear.

Life as a Mother Bear in Alaska

Oso has raised several litters over the years.

According to the US Forest Service, she had one cub in 2019, two in 2024 and three in 2026.

However, observers spotted her with only two cubs in August, and the fate of the third remains unknown.

Wildlife officials believe she did everything possible to protect her offspring.

The “Mama Bear” award is part of an annual recognition program celebrating bears that live in the Anan area.

The region is known for its large gatherings of black and brown bears during the summer months, when the animals come to feed on salmon.

Anan Creek is home to 39 identified bears, including 31 black bears and eight brown bears.

The creek attracts bears because of its abundant pink salmon, providing an important food source for adults and growing cubs.

Researchers monitor the animals’ behavior and use wildlife cameras to broadcast their activities live, allowing viewers around the world to observe bears in their natural habitat.

The surrounding Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the United States and covers a vast area of southeastern Alaska.

For Oso, the award recognizes a difficult year of motherhood in the wild.

Her story offers a glimpse into the protective instincts of mother bears and the challenges of raising young in one of America’s most remarkable wilderness areas.
