The Chicago-born actress, best known for her role in Breaking Away, enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades across film, television and theater.

American actress Barbara Barrie, who received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in the 1979 film Breaking Away, has died at the age of 95.

Barrie died Wednesday, October 28, at her home in Manhattan following a diagnosis of terminal cancer. Her daughter, Jane Harnik, confirmed the news to The New York Times.

According to reports, Barrie died through medical aid in dying, in accordance with New York state law. Her representative said the actress supported the legal option and had publicly advocated for it.

A Career Spanning More Than Six Decades

Born Barbara Ann Berman on May 23, 1931, in Chicago, Barrie built a distinguished career across film, television and theater. She became known for her warm, nuanced performances, often portraying mothers and grandmothers with emotional depth and understated strength.

One of her most celebrated roles came in Breaking Away, the 1979 coming-of-age drama in which she played the mother of the film’s central character. The movie, about four young men in Indiana navigating life after high school, received five Academy Award nominations. Barrie was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Early Recognition at Cannes

Barrie’s talent had been recognized years earlier. In 1964, she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in One Potato, Two Potato.

The film explored interracial love and racial prejudice in American society, addressing controversial social issues of its time.

Throughout her long career, Barrie earned recognition for bringing authenticity and sensitivity to a wide range of characters, establishing herself as a respected presence in American entertainment.

Her legacy spans generations of film, television and theater audiences, with Breaking Away remaining one of the defining performances of her career.

Television, Film and Broadway Success

Barrie later appeared in films including Private Benjamin and Judy Berlin, further expanding an already impressive screen career.

She also enjoyed considerable success on television. Audiences remember her appearances in series such as Barney Miller and Suddenly Susan, in which she played the grandmother of Brooke Shields’ character. Her television work earned her multiple Emmy Award nominations.

Her achievements extended to Broadway. Barrie received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company.

Turning Personal Health Struggles Into Advocacy

Beyond acting, Barrie spoke openly about her health challenges. In 1994, she was diagnosed with rectal cancer, an experience that later inspired her to write two books and advocate for early detection of colorectal cancer.

In 2014, she revealed that she had also been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive lung disease.

Her willingness to discuss her experiences helped bring attention to serious health issues and the importance of early diagnosis.

Family and Legacy

In 1964, Barrie married actor and producer Jay Harnick. The couple had two children, Jane and Aaron. Harnick died in 2007.

Barrie is survived by her two children and three granddaughters.

Remembered for her versatility, emotional depth and enduring presence across film, television and theater, she leaves behind a body of work that spanned more than six decades.
