Serbian Community in Canada to Celebrate Heritage at Hamilton Fall Folkfest

The Serbian community in Hamilton, Ontario, is preparing for an evening of traditional dance and cultural celebration as St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Cathedral hosts its Fall Folkfest on Saturday, November 14, 2026.

The event will bring together families, young dancers and members of the Serbian-Canadian community to celebrate the traditions that have connected generations of immigrants and their descendants.

According to the cathedral’s official announcement, doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is $15 CAD, while participating dancers and children under 12 can attend free of charge.

Keeping Serbian Traditions Alive in Canada

The festival is part of a broader effort by the Serbian Orthodox community in Hamilton to preserve its cultural heritage through music, traditional dance and community participation.

St. Nicholas Folklore Hamilton plays an important role in that mission.

The organization was formed in September 2024 when the folklore programs associated with the Serbian Orthodox churches on Nash Road and Barton Street joined forces.

Today, the combined program has 147 participating children, according to the cathedral’s website.

Through regular rehearsals, young Serbian Canadians learn traditional dances while developing friendships and maintaining a connection with their families’ cultural roots.

The 2026–2027 folklore season began in September, with classes organized for children and teenagers of different ages.

The program is supported by instructors, parents and volunteers who help keep Serbian traditions accessible to younger generations.

A Community With Deep Roots in Hamilton

St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Cathedral has been a gathering place for Serbian families in Hamilton since 1964.

Beyond religious services, the cathedral supports cultural education, community celebrations and activities designed to strengthen connections among Serbian Canadians.

Events such as Fall Folkfest offer an opportunity for younger generations to share the traditions they learn throughout the year with relatives and the wider community.

They also provide a meeting place for families who want to maintain their Serbian identity while building their lives in Canada.

For many diaspora communities, traditional dance remains an important connection to ancestral villages, regional customs and family histories.

The November 14 gathering continues that tradition, offering another occasion for the Serbian community in Hamilton to come together.
