Balkan music and traditional folk dancing are coming to Kingston, New York, on November 11, as the TEMPO Performing Arts Center launches a new dance night featuring live music and opportunities for audience participation.

The event will feature the MacNCheez Balkan Power Trio, whose performances draw inspiration from the traditional wedding bands of the southern Balkans.

Unlike a conventional concert, the evening will invite visitors to learn traditional circle dances and experience the region’s musical heritage firsthand.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. at TEMPO Performing Arts Center in Kingston.

Balkan Music and Traditional Dances Take Center Stage

The MacNCheez Balkan Power Trio combines saxophone, accordion, and tapan drum, creating a sound inspired by the lively musical traditions of southeastern Europe.

The tapan, a large double-headed drum commonly used in Balkan folk music, provides a powerful rhythmic foundation for traditional dancing.

According to the organizers, the performance will draw inspiration from village wedding bands, where live music and group dancing have long been central to community celebrations.

Visitors will have an opportunity to participate in traditional circle dances, a familiar part of celebrations in Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and other Balkan countries.

The event will also include dance instruction, allowing newcomers to learn the movements before joining the festivities.

TEMPO describes the new program as a monthly Balkan dance night, creating opportunities for local audiences to discover music and traditions from the region.

The dance instructor for the November event has not yet been announced.

Bringing Balkan Cultural Traditions to American Audiences

The upcoming performance follows another appearance by the MacNCheez Balkan Power Trio in Kingston.

On October 22, the ensemble performed at Unicorn Bar, presenting Macedonian and regional Balkan musical traditions alongside a participatory dance lesson.

The November event will take the experience to a new venue, with TEMPO Performing Arts Center introducing the music as part of its cultural programming.

For members of Balkan-American communities, events of this kind offer opportunities to reconnect with familiar musical traditions.

They also introduce American audiences to cultural practices in which music and dancing are shared experiences rather than performances watched from a distance.

Traditional circle dances remain an important part of weddings, festivals, and family celebrations across the Balkans.

Although the movements and musical styles vary between countries and regions, the dances frequently bring participants together in a circle or line, emphasizing collective participation.

The Kingston event will give visitors an opportunity to experience that tradition through live music.
