The family of Tenerife footballer Jesus de Miguel is reportedly considering legal action following his tragic death after a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono.
The 30-year-old striker died early Tuesday morning, less than 15 hours after the frightening incident. During the match, Owono struck De Miguel directly in the chest with his leg as the two players collided. De Miguel remained on the pitch in visible distress, and despite efforts to save him, the impact proved fatal.
The footballer was laid to rest yesterday. Following the funeral, his immediate family issued their first public statement, expressing gratitude for the support they have received.
“We cannot find enough words to express our gratitude for all the messages of support we have received, every phone call and everything you are doing for us. It shows that our son left a mark and that he will not be forgotten,” the family said.
“His departure leaves a void that nobody can fill, but through our memories, we will make sure that he continues to ‘live’ within all of us. Thank you for the love you have shown us. We only ask for a little privacy during the difficult period ahead.”
However, according to Spanish media reports, the De Miguel family is struggling to come to terms with the circumstances surrounding his death and is now considering its next steps.
Spanish outlet Defensa Central reports that the family is assembling a legal team to explore filing criminal proceedings against Owono, seeking to ensure that the goalkeeper faces legal consequences over the incident.
Reports have also suggested that Owono could face a prison sentence of up to four years if prosecutors bring criminal charges in connection with De Miguel’s death.
No criminal conviction or finding of legal responsibility has been established. The circumstances of the collision and any potential legal consequences would need to be determined through an official investigation and judicial proceedings.
