President Donald Trump‘s approval rating stands at 32% as Americans head into the 2026 midterm elections, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The survey, completed on November 2, places Trump’s approval near the lowest level of his political career.
The findings come as voters prepare to decide control of Congress on November 3.
What the Latest Poll Shows
The Reuters/Ipsos survey found that 32% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance as president.
Meanwhile, Democrats held an eight-point advantage on a generic congressional ballot. Some 46% of respondents preferred Democratic candidates, compared with 38% who favored Republicans.
The poll also found that half of independent voters viewed the election as an opportunity to express opposition to Trump.
However, national polling does not determine individual congressional races.
Local candidates, voter turnout and state-level political conditions will all influence the final results.
Why the Midterm Elections Matter
Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, giving Trump’s administration legislative support for its policy agenda.
The November 3 elections will determine whether that arrangement continues during the final two years of his presidency.
Democrats are seeking additional seats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Republicans, meanwhile, are campaigning to maintain their congressional majorities.
The economy, immigration and the cost of living have been major issues throughout the election campaign.
For Trump, the results will help determine how much support his administration can expect in Congress.
Still, the Reuters/Ipsos poll offers a snapshot of public opinion rather than a prediction of the election outcome.
