One woman was killed, and several other people were injured today in Sarajevo when a city tram derailed on one of the busiest streets near the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo.
“One person has died. According to current information, two people are injured. The prosecutor has been informed, and police officers are on the scene,” the Ministry of Interior said in a statement.
According to available information, the tram derailed around noon, broke through a protective barrier, and slid about ten meters along the road. The entire front section of the tram was destroyed.
In the accident, the woman was crushed by the tram when it left the tracks. To reach her body, firefighters had to cut through the damaged structure of the vehicle.
The tram involved was one of the older Czech-made models, which are being used less frequently, as last year they began to be replaced with new vehicles produced by the Swiss company Stadler.
