Belgrade Derby Takes on Added EuroLeague Weight as Red Star and Partizan Enter the Clash With Different Motivations

The upcoming basketball derby between Crvena Zvezda and Partizan is being framed as far more than another meeting between eternal rivals, with both teams approaching the EuroLeague clash from very different competitive positions. For Red Star, the game is being presented as one of the key matches in the fight for a place in the next phase of the competition, while for Partizan, despite having no remaining playoff chances in EuroLeague, the derby is still being treated as highly important for confidence, rhythm, and momentum ahead of the closing stretch of the ABA League season. The game is set to be played on Thursday at 20:00 in the Belgrade Arena.

Recent results shape the mood before the game

Both sides enter the derby after positive domestic results. Red Star defeated Dubai 84–82 in the Top Eight phase of the ABA League, while Partizan beat Bosna and used that victory to move into first place ahead of Dubai after Red Star’s win over the team from the United Arab Emirates. Those results gave the derby an added layer of significance, especially because both clubs are trying to preserve strong form at the end of the season. Aleksa Radanov, after Partizan’s win over Bosna, stressed the importance of maintaining the level the team has shown in recent weeks and said the remaining games must be played at the highest level in order to secure first place. He also said the derby matters for self-confidence, for the continuation of the ABA League campaign, and for the remaining EuroLeague matches.

Rakočević points to rebounding and steals as the decisive themes

Former Serbian player Igor Rakočević said ahead of the derby that two statistical strengths could define the matchup: Red Star’s dominance on the boards and Partizan’s excellence in stealing the ball. According to the analysis cited before the game, Red Star leads the competition in rebounding, averaging 38.3 rebounds per match, while Partizan tops the EuroLeague in steals with 7.4 per game. Rakočević said Red Star’s physical strength, size, speed, and rebounding ability have been central to some of their biggest away victories, adding that more rebounds mean more possessions and therefore more chances to score. At the same time, he said Partizan has built its identity on defense and ball pressure, making that contrast one of the central tactical storylines before the derby.

Red Star’s offensive strength and interior power highlighted

The analysis around Red Star presents the team as one with a very strong attacking structure and one of the most physically imposing frontcourts in Europe. The discussion before the derby emphasizes the contribution of players such as Joel Bolomboy, Ebuka Izundu, Semi Ojeleye, Cody Miller-McIntyre, and Chima Moneke, with particular attention given to Moneke’s defensive rebounding numbers. Rakočević said Red Star has an athletically powerful team that is difficult to contain, especially in rebounding situations, and argued that their biggest offensive burden rests with Jordan Nwora and Jared Butler, whom he described as among the best scorers in Europe in one-on-one play. He also noted that Red Star’s offensive philosophy can sometimes leave the team vulnerable in transition when opponents attack quickly after defensive rebounds or broken possessions.

EuroLeague power rankings bring fresh recognition for both clubs

Another important pre-derby theme is the latest EuroLeague “Power Rankings,” which were released after 34 rounds and presented both Serbian clubs as stronger than their current table positions alone would suggest. Red Star was ranked seventh, while Partizan was placed twelfth on the list. The rankings were described not as a projection of the final standings, but as an estimate of current team strength and form. In that framework, Red Star was portrayed as a team stronger than its current ninth place in the standings suggests, while Partizan was credited with a significant jump after a run of results that improved its image despite its lower position in the table. The analysis singled out Carlik Jones as a major factor in Partizan’s resurgence and linked his performances to a five-game winning streak in March, while also saying the derby against Red Star could further complicate the playoff race for others.

Partizan stresses continuity and confidence despite EuroLeague limitations

Although Partizan no longer has a path to the EuroLeague playoffs, the team’s camp is still treating the derby as a serious test with practical value. Radanov said every win remains important and underlined that the team benefited from shared minutes in the Bosna game, which allowed some key players to rest before the upcoming clash. His comments reflect a message of continuity rather than resignation: even without a playoff route in Europe, Partizan sees the derby as an important part of maintaining level, preserving confidence, and carrying momentum into the decisive phase of the ABA League season.

Miljenović emerges as a new factor for Red Star

A separate line of attention before the derby is focused on Stefan Miljenović, who became one of the main stories after Red Star’s 84–82 win over Dubai. In that game, Miljenović scored 20 points and added five rebounds and five assists in 24 minutes, earning strong approval from the crowd and praise from coach Saša Obradović. The reporting describes him as possible “fresh blood” ahead of the decisive EuroLeague battles, with the derby against Partizan presented as the first major test in that sequence. Miljenović said he did not know what to expect after not playing for 16 days, but settled in once he entered the game. He also thanked the fans for their chants and said he and the coach have good communication. The coverage further notes that his defensive display earlier in the season against Panathinaikos guard Kendrick Nunn had already shown he can cope at the elite European level.

Derby tension rises with form, rankings, and rotation questions all in play

Taken together, the pre-derby coverage presents the game as a collision of contrasting strengths, competitive needs, and emotional weight. Red Star enters with stronger EuroLeague pressure, a powerful rebounding profile, and a growing belief that it may be stronger than its table position indicates. Partizan arrives with renewed domestic momentum, improved external recognition through the power rankings, and the determination to use the derby as a platform for confidence and continuity even without a EuroLeague playoff chance. The broader message from the coverage is that the derby will not be defined only by rivalry but by form, tactical contrasts, player momentum, and the immediate significance the match holds for both teams at this stage of the season.
