Trump delivered his latest emergency address in a much different tone that signaled a clear shift in approach. There was no mention of ongoing peace talks, which indicates that his focus has maybe shifted from peace talks and diplomacy to an even more aggressive military approach to the war and achieving their goals.
Trump claims that the US’s military targets in Iran are “nearly completed”, he signaled that larger-scale airstrikes could follow in the next phase of the conflict. Possibly hinting at the Iranian power plants, as he has been in the past few weeks, as the next likely targets.
He also boasted about recent key military victories, with impeccable execution that will inevitably lead to success. Mentioning that Iran’s navy and air force are on their last legs, damaged beyond repair, with their missile arsenal reaching its end as supplies are running low, and their capabilities are nearly disabled.
This time, Trump’s focus wasn’t centered on NATO, after previously hitting them with harsh criticism and threatening them with the possibility of the US’s withdrawal from the pact. But the president did mention that the countries that rely on the Strait of Hormuz for transportation should show a lot more courage and take an active part in the efforts of securing the route.
There were mixed feelings within the US after Trump’s long-awaited speech, tensions arose as some analyst predicted that he might put a stop to the conflict, while also speculations were circulating about a possible ground invasion of Iran. The lack of a clear strategy and constant changes of the end goals for the US were also a major point of criticism.
