King Charles III and Queen Camilla will travel to the United States from April 27 to 30 for a four-day state visit that combines ceremonial events with a broader effort to underline the long-standing relationship between Britain and the United States. The trip, which includes stops in Washington, New York, and Virginia, also comes as the UK seeks to reinforce ties with the Trump administration at a politically sensitive moment.
The visit will begin in Washington, where the royal couple is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The program includes a private tea, a ceremonial White House welcome, additional meetings, and a formal state dinner, placing the opening leg of the visit squarely in the realm of high-level diplomacy.
One of the central moments of the trip will come on April 28, when King Charles is expected to address a joint session of Congress. That will make him only the second British monarch to do so, following Queen Elizabeth II’s address in 1991.
The Washington program also includes a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of fallen service members, reflecting the military dimension of the transatlantic relationship. From there, the visit will move to New York, where the king and queen are expected to meet first responders and families of victims connected to the September 11 attacks while also taking part in events tied to youth, community engagement, and literature.
In Virginia, the royal couple is set to attend cultural events and community celebrations linked to America’s 250th anniversary before continuing to Bermuda. The broader message of the trip is expected to center on shared history, institutional ties, and people-to-people connections, while also serving a practical diplomatic purpose amid new strains in the bilateral relationship.
