A One-Man Business Empire? The Bosnian Company That Generated Half a Billion Euros

One company in Bosnia and Herzegovina is strikingly challenging the logic that large teams and complex structures are key to success in a business landscape.

With just one to two employees, the Sarajevo-based branch of energy trading company GEN-I has managed to generate nearly half a billion euros in revenue over the past three years—an outcome that has drawn attention across the region.

The numbers are particularly surprising given the company’s minimal workforce, highlighting how modern business models, especially in energy trading, can operate with lean teams while handling massive financial flows.

In the past year alone, the company reported revenues of around €191 million, confirming its position as a significant player in the regional energy market.

Experts point out that such figures do not necessarily tie to traditional production or labor-intensive operations. Instead, they reflect the nature of electricity trading, where companies act as intermediaries, buying and selling energy across markets, often leveraging digital systems and international networks.

Still, the case has sparked public curiosity and debate, as it challenges conventional perceptions of how businesses function—especially in economies like Bosnia and Herzegovina, where administrative complexity and labor dynamics usually play a major role.

Whether considered a sign of efficiency or a quirk of the energy market, the company’s performance stands as a rare example of how massive revenues can be generated with an almost invisible workforce.
