Mickoski Says Macedonia Ranks Among Europe’s Most Active in Crisis Response

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski says Macedonia has positioned itself among the three leading countries in Europe in terms of measures taken to cushion the impact of the energy crisis and rising prices.

Referring to the latest International Monetary Fund data, which he said was published on April 15, Mickoski stated that the country stands out for the scale of its state intervention relative to GDP, with policies aimed at protecting citizens’ living standards. He argued that these figures challenge opposition claims that the government’s response was slow or poorly coordinated.

Speaking about energy policy, the prime minister said the government is continuing with steps designed to ease pressure on fuel prices, including adjustments to tax rates. He added that the Energy Regulatory Commission is also expected to contribute to a further reduction in retail fuel prices, with a projected drop of around 1.5 denars per litre.

Mickoski also compared fuel prices across the region, saying Macedonia still has some of the lowest fuel costs in Europe. According to his remarks, prices in the country range from about 1.27 to 1.31 euros, while in Greece and Albania they are above two euros, and in Serbia they are around 1.63 euros.

On inflation, he said current economic indicators point to stabilization at 4.9 percent, marking a notable improvement compared with 2022, when price pressures were in double digits.
