A deadly shooting at the Teotihuacan archaeological complex in Mexico has left one Canadian woman dead and at least 13 other foreign visitors injured, according to local authorities.
The attack took place at one of Mexico’s most visited and historically significant landmarks, located roughly an hour north of Mexico City. Officials said an armed man opened fire for reasons that have not yet been clarified before taking his own life at the scene.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the incident had deeply shaken the country and expressed support for the victims and their families. She also noted that the Mexican government is in contact with the Canadian Embassy following the death of the Canadian national.
Authorities said the injured include tourists from Colombia, Canada, Russia, Brazil and the United States. Seven people were reported to have suffered gunshot wounds, while others were hurt during the panic that followed, including injuries caused by falls. Among those wounded by gunfire were a six-year-old child from Colombia and a 13-year-old girl from Brazil.
Teotihuacan, known for landmarks such as the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the country. A video circulated on X reportedly shows the gunman firing from the area of the Pyramid of the Moon.
The shooting is being treated as an exceptional act of violence in a site generally regarded as calm and heavily visited by tourists. The incident comes just weeks before Mexico is set to co-host the FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and the United States in June and July.
At its height in the fifth and sixth centuries, Teotihuacan was one of the largest urban centers in the world and the leading metropolis of Mesoamerica. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1987.
