Montenegro Records Over €1.6 Billion in SEPA Transactions in Six Months, Saving Millions for Citizens and Businesses

Montenegro’s integration into the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) is already delivering measurable economic results, with more than €1.6 billion in transactions processed within the first six months of participation. The figures highlight the rapid adoption of the system by both citizens and businesses, signaling a significant shift toward more efficient financial operations.

During this initial period, total savings generated through SEPA transactions reached approximately €3.8 million, reflecting the lower transaction costs compared to traditional international payment systems. The reduced fees have made cross-border payments more accessible and cost-effective, particularly for businesses engaged in frequent international transfers.

SEPA allows payments in euros to be carried out under the same conditions as domestic transactions across participating countries, eliminating many of the inefficiencies associated with older systems such as SWIFT. This has resulted in faster, more predictable, and significantly cheaper transfers for users.

The introduction of SEPA is also seen as a major step in Montenegro’s broader economic integration with the European Union, effectively placing the country within the core of the EU’s financial infrastructure even before full membership. Institutions emphasize that this development strengthens financial stability, improves liquidity, and enhances the competitiveness of the domestic economy.

Overall, the early results point to strong utilization of the system and confirm its potential to generate long-term benefits, both through direct savings and through deeper financial connectivity with European markets.
