Lebanon Pushes for Ceasefire Extension Ahead of New US-Mediated Talks with Israel

Lebanon is preparing to seek an extension of the current ceasefire with Israel during a new round of talks in Washington, as concerns grow over renewed violence along the southern border. The meeting, hosted by the United States, comes just days before the truce is due to expire and after one of the deadliest days in Lebanon since the agreement took effect.

Although the ceasefire has reduced the overall level of fighting, tensions have not subsided completely. Israeli strikes have continued in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has maintained that it reserves the right to respond as long as Israeli forces remain present in areas it considers occupied. The latest escalation, which left several people dead, including journalist Amal Khalil, has added urgency to the diplomatic effort.

According to Lebanese officials, Beirut’s delegation will press for more than just an extension of the truce. It is also expected to call for an end to Israeli demolition operations in southern villages and to seek broader guarantees that the ceasefire terms will be respected in full. Lebanese authorities argue that any next phase of negotiations should begin only after violence is halted and the truce is stabilized.

Hezbollah has signaled that it does not oppose the continuation of the ceasefire, but insists that this must be tied to full Israeli compliance. The group has also rejected the idea of direct negotiations with Israel, calling instead for any future steps to be handled through the Lebanese state and international mediation.

The current border crisis intensified after hostilities resumed earlier this year, drawing Lebanon once again into a wider regional confrontation. Since then, Lebanese authorities say thousands of people have been killed, while Israel has expanded its military presence in a strip of territory in the south, arguing that the move is necessary to protect its northern communities from cross-border attacks.

Lebanon’s broader objectives in the negotiations reportedly include securing an Israeli withdrawal, addressing the issue of Lebanese detainees held in Israel, and moving toward a clearer demarcation of the land border. Israel, for its part, is expected to press for measures aimed at weakening Hezbollah’s armed presence and creating conditions for a more durable security arrangement.

The Washington meeting is expected to draw senior-level attention, with top American officials involved in the mediation effort. Regardless of whether a breakthrough is achieved, the talks are likely to shape the next stage of a fragile process in which both diplomacy and military pressure remain closely intertwined.
