Third U.S. Aircraft Carrier Moves Closer to Iran as Washington Expands Naval Presence Near Hormuz

The United States is reinforcing its military presence near Iran, with a third aircraft carrier now entering the broader region as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz remain high.

According to U.S. Central Command, the USS George H. W. Bush has arrived in the Indian Ocean, though officials have not disclosed the ship’s exact assignment. Its arrival adds to an already significant American naval buildup linked to operations focused on restricting access to Iranian ports and monitoring maritime activity near one of the world’s most strategic shipping routes.

A substantial part of the U.S. naval force in the area is made up of Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, including the USS Pinckney, USS Michael Murphy, USS Delbert D. Black, USS Rafael Peralta, and USS Spruance. These warships are equipped for missile and torpedo operations and form a core part of the fleet’s strike and escort capability.

Also operating in the Arabian Sea is the USS Abraham Lincoln, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that has remained a key platform in the region. Alongside it is the USS Gerald R. Ford, currently the largest aircraft carrier in the world, which recently transited the Suez Canal and further strengthened the U.S. naval posture.

The American presence also includes amphibious assault ships such as the USS Tripoli and USS New Orleans, as well as the USS Canberra, a fast combat vessel from the Independence class.

Reports indicate that the broader operation around the Strait of Hormuz involves more than 12 military vessels and around 100 combat and surveillance aircraft. U.S. forces are also said to have turned back at least 29 ships from passing through the area, underscoring the scale of the maritime control effort now underway.

The expanded deployment highlights the growing strategic importance of Hormuz, where military pressure, shipping security, and regional power rivalry are increasingly intersecting.
