Banja Luka Marks City Day with Tribute to Liberation, Public Ceremonies and Weekend Events

Banja Luka marked its City Day and the 81st anniversary of liberation in the Second World War with a series of commemorative and public events dedicated to remembrance, civic identity and the idea of freedom. April 22 is observed in memory of the city’s liberation in 1945, and this year’s program combined official ceremonies, awards and public celebration across several locations.

The observance began with wreath-laying at the Central Memorial to fallen soldiers of the Army of Republika Srpska, followed by a formal academy at Banski dvor. The events were framed as both a tribute to the past and a reflection on the values the city seeks to carry forward.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Draško Stanivuković described the anniversary as a moment to honor the long struggle for freedom and to reflect on the city’s future. He said Banja Luka should be seen as a place of belonging, openness and shared life, pointing to this year’s slogan, “Banja Luka – city of a big heart,” as a message of inclusion and civic unity. He also stressed that the city belongs to all its residents, regardless of ethnic background, and that its future should be built through coexistence and common purpose.

As part of the formal academy, several awards were presented to individuals and organizations recognized for their contribution to the city’s development, public life and wider reputation. Former mayor Dragoljub Davidović received the “Key to the City,” while Golden Coat of Arms awards were presented for achievements in areas including cooperation with other cities, sport and humanitarian work. Among those recognized were Jelisaveta Karađorđević, Saša Hajduković and the humanitarian organization “Serbs for Serbs.”

The public segment of the celebration was held at Kastel Fortress, where citizens and visitors gathered for a parade, live music and symbolic installations tied to the theme of the event. A large heart-shaped cake and a concert by “Rock Symphony” were part of the program, while a floating light installation added a visual element linked to the city’s annual slogan. City officials joined residents during the festivities, which also included a traditional kolo dance in the city center.

Delegations from several partner cities attended the celebration, including representatives from Niš. Their presence was presented as a sign of ongoing cooperation and friendly ties between municipalities in the region. Local officials welcomed the guests and underlined the importance of maintaining dialogue, partnership and mutual respect through such gatherings.

Among the public messages delivered on the occasion were congratulations from political figures, including SNSD leader Milorad Dodik, who described freedom as the city’s most important historical achievement and referred to Banja Luka as one of the key administrative, educational, cultural and economic centers of Republika Srpska.

The marking of City Day is set to continue through the weekend. Additional events include the Banja Luka Running League, children’s races, an award ceremony and an evening DJ program at Kastel Fortress, extending the anniversary into a broader civic celebration.
