U.S. President Donald Trump convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council to discuss a new Iranian proposal that could be linked to efforts to reduce military tensions in the Middle East.
After the meeting, the White House said the administration’s position toward Tehran remains unchanged. Speaking to reporters, press secretary Karoline Leavitt stressed that Washington is not moving away from its key demands.
According to Leavitt, the United States continues to insist on two central conditions: Iran must abandon its nuclear program, and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and unobstructed. Both points have been repeatedly presented by Trump as non-negotiable issues in any potential arrangement with Tehran.
“The president’s red lines on Iran are clear and they have not changed,” Leavitt said. She added that those positions are known both to the American public and to Iranian officials.
Leavitt also sought to clarify the nature of the meeting, saying it was not necessarily a formal review of the Iranian proposal, but rather a broader discussion of the issue. She said further details would come directly from Trump.
The meeting comes at a sensitive moment for the region, with diplomatic efforts continuing amid uncertainty over the future of the conflict and the security of one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
