Slovenian Inspectors Review Ljubljana Hostel Offering Rooftop Tent Stays

A hostel in central Ljubljana has drawn the attention of Slovenian inspection authorities after offering guests an unusual type of accommodation: overnight stays in tents set up on a seventh-floor terrace.

The hostel, located on Miklošičeva Street in the heart of the Slovenian capital, advertised the rooftop tents as a lodging option for visitors seeking a different kind of city experience. However, the offer quickly raised questions among regulators, particularly over safety, building standards and whether the space is legally approved for overnight accommodation.

Slovenia’s chief market inspector, Andreja But, confirmed that the case is already under review. According to the initial inspection findings, the accommodation offer includes tents placed on the terrace of a commercial building. A night in one of the tents during June is reportedly priced at 75 euros.

While Slovenia’s new Hospitality Act may allow this type of accommodation if the tent is part of a properly registered lodging facility, authorities say several issues still need to be clarified. These include whether the rooftop area is safe for guests, whether the building documentation permits overnight stays on the terrace, and whether the facility complies with construction and spatial planning regulations.

“We established that the offer includes tents for guests on a seventh-floor terrace. The case has been forwarded to the Construction Inspectorate, which will determine whether the space is legally suitable for this purpose,” But said.

The case has sparked wider public interest because it sits between two very different interpretations: for some, it may look like an adventurous and creative tourism concept; for others, it raises serious concerns about guest safety and proper regulation.

Until the inspection process is completed, the legality of the rooftop tent accommodation remains uncertain.
