Traveling Through Ljubljana? The Bus Station Is About to Move

Ljubljana’s main bus station will temporarily move on August 24, 2026, bringing an important change for anyone traveling through the Slovenian capital. The new station will be located along Masarykova cesta, around 150 meters east of the current site. The relocation is part of a much larger redevelopment of the area around Ljubljana’s main railway station. The temporary location will remain in use while a new permanent bus station is built along Vilharjeva cesta. The temporary station will be established on the site of the existing parking lot between the railway tracks and Masarykova cesta. It will operate during construction of the permanent facility planned on the northern side of the railway station. The redevelopment is intended to create a modern central passenger hub connecting bus and rail services. For travelers, this means that the familiar station layout will soon change.

One of the biggest changes will be the number of available platforms. The temporary station will have 46 bus platforms, including seven designed for articulated buses. The new arrangement is expected to make bus traffic more organized and efficient. Passengers will also find a dedicated building with a traffic office and five ticket counters. Another important improvement is the introduction of bank card payments for bus tickets. Passengers will also have access to luggage lockers, toilets, an Urbanomat and a Slovenian Railways ticket machine. Thirty bicycles will be available through the Nomago Bikes rental system. Additional bicycle racks will also allow travelers to combine cycling with public transportation.

The relocation will be particularly relevant for people traveling to popular destinations such as Bled, Kranj, Koper, Piran and Ljubljana Airport. Arriva has confirmed that most of its departures will continue from the same platform numbers. However, some routes will have changes, including services toward Škofja Loka, Brnik Airport and Bled. Travelers should therefore check their departure information before heading to the station. The temporary move is part of a broader transformation of Ljubljana’s central transport area. The project includes improvements around the railway station and changes to Masarykova cesta. A new permanent bus station is planned along Vilharjeva cesta as part of the redevelopment. The long term goal is to create a more modern and integrated transport center for the city.

For tourists arriving in Ljubljana, the change means that anyone using buses from August 24 should pay particular attention to updated platform information. Although the temporary station is only around 150 meters from the current location, finding the correct platform may take additional time, especially during the first days of operation. Passengers with luggage or tight connections should arrive early. Checking the latest departure information before traveling will also help avoid unnecessary confusion. The temporary station is expected to remain in operation until the permanent facility is completed. Once the redevelopment is finished, Ljubljana will have a significantly more modern transport hub designed to bring bus and rail services closer together. For now, however, August 24 is the key date for travelers. If you are taking a bus from Ljubljana after that day, do not automatically head to the old platforms because the city’s main bus station will have a new temporary home.
