Vučić Hands Over Presidential Duties to Ana Brnabić

Aleksandar Vučić, who resigned as president of Serbia on Sunday, formally handed over presidential duties to National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić on Monday.

Brnabić will serve as Acting President of Serbia until a new president is elected. Under Serbian law, the speaker of parliament can perform the duties of president for no more than three months, and presidential elections must be held within that period.

During the handover ceremony at the Presidency, Vučić transferred the relevant presidential documents and the presidential seal to Brnabić. He also wished her a happy birthday, which coincided with the day she assumed the presidential duties.

Speaking after the ceremony, Brnabić thanked Vučić and said she was honored to receive the responsibility from him.

“It is an honor for me to receive this duty from such a man and to be able to safeguard this position until the people elect a new president. I know that Aleksandar Vučić is embarking on a new fight, and I wish him good luck. I will safeguard this position until the election of the President of the Republic of Serbia,” Brnabić said

Vučić submitted his resignation on September 27, saying he wanted to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections as an ordinary citizen. Presidential elections are expected to be held by the end of December.
