Serbia’s opposition movement Kreni–Promeni has formally requested an extraordinary session of the Belgrade City Assembly to seek the removal of Mayor Aleksandar Šapić. The move follows an alleged assault on opposition councilor Tatjana Mićić, who suffered serious facial injuries.
The movement announced that it had collected signatures from 41 city councilors, meeting the requirement to request a special assembly session.
Kreni–Promeni said the president of the City Assembly must schedule the session within 15 days.
The request has support from several opposition parties. Alongside Kreni–Promeni’s 21 councilors, representatives of the Green-Left Front (ZLF), Movement of Free Citizens (PSG), Democratic Party (DS), and other opposition groups signed the initiative.
Alleged Assault Sparks Political Dispute
The dispute centers on an incident involving Mićić and Šapić on September 28 in Belgrade’s Bežanijska Kosa neighborhood.
Mićić alleges that the mayor attacked her during the confrontation. Medical examinations subsequently identified serious injuries, including fractures to her nasal bone and part of her upper jaw.
Kreni–Promeni filed a criminal complaint against Šapić following the incident.
However, the mayor denies striking the councilor. Prosecutors are examining the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The allegations have intensified political tensions in Belgrade, with opposition representatives demanding accountability from the city administration.
Opposition Pushes for Extraordinary Assembly Session
The formal request followed a dispute during the Belgrade City Assembly’s previous session.
Opposition councilors walked out after the assembly rejected a proposal to discuss the mayor’s responsibility for the incident involving Mićić.
Kreni–Promeni subsequently gathered the signatures needed to demand a separate session dedicated to Šapić’s removal.
The movement thanked the opposition councilors who supported the initiative and called for the assembly to address the matter.
The requested session would allow councilors to debate whether Šapić should remain in office.
For now, the mayor continues to deny the assault allegation, while prosecutors investigate the incident. The extraordinary session has not yet been scheduled.
