Balkan music, traditional dancing and folk costumes will take over Glen Echo Park in Maryland on Saturday, October 17, as the region’s cultural traditions come together for a five-hour festival near Washington, D.C.

The Glen Echo Balkan Fest will run from noon to 5 p.m. at the park’s historic Bumper Car Pavilion. Organized by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (FSGW), the event will feature live performances and a special presentation of traditional clothing from the former Yugoslavia.

The festival welcomes Balkan-American families and anyone interested in discovering the region’s musical and cultural heritage.

Balkan Music and Dance Festival to Feature Zlatne Uste

One of the main attractions will be the New York-based Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band, which has performed traditional Balkan brass music since 1983.

The ensemble has appeared at venues across the United States, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Its international performances include appearances at Serbia’s famous Guča Brass Festival, where the band helped introduce American musicians to audiences familiar with the region’s brass traditions.

In addition, Zlatne Uste established New York’s Golden Festival in 1986, an event dedicated to Balkan music and dancing.

Greek traditional music will also feature prominently in the Maryland program.

The ensemble Karpouzi, led by musician Spyros Koliavasilis, will perform music rooted in the traditions of mainland Greece, the Greek islands and Asia Minor.

Its musicians use instruments such as the oud, laouto and santouri, preserving musical styles that remain part of the region’s cultural identity.

According to the official festival announcement, the event will combine musical performances with activities celebrating Balkan heritage.

Traditional Costumes From Macedonia and Former Yugoslavia

Another highlight will be A Journey Through Ex-Yugoslavia, a presentation organized through Balkan Roots, LLC.

The program will feature traditional folk costumes from Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia.

The costumes come from the collection of Biljana Regan, whose work focuses on presenting Balkan cultural traditions to American audiences.

Visitors will have an opportunity to see clothing that reflects different regional customs and the shared history of communities across the former Yugoslavia.

For Balkan-American families, the presentation offers a way to introduce younger generations to traditions connected with their family backgrounds.

Meanwhile, visitors unfamiliar with Balkan culture can experience its music and traditional clothing in a community setting.

The event will take place at Glen Echo Park, a well-known cultural destination in Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C.

Organizers encourage visitors to bring a picnic or purchase food at Praline Bakery inside the park.

General admission costs $25, while tickets for visitors aged 12–17 and qualifying low-income attendees cost $10. The organizers also list a separate admission category for children aged 11 and younger.

For those interested in attending, registration details and additional information are available through the Folklore Society of Greater Washington.

With performances by musicians based in the United States and a presentation of traditional Balkan clothing, Glen Echo Balkan Fest offers a weekend gathering centered on the region’s cultural heritage.
