Chicago’s Serbian-American community will host the world premiere of a new sacred choral composition on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral.

The work, titled Serbian Liturgy, was composed by Kurt Sander and draws on the musical tradition of Serbian Orthodox chant.

The premiere will take place during a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the cathedral, located at 5701 North Redwood Drive in Chicago.

According to the official announcement from Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, the composition was made possible through a generous donation from the Hilandar Foundation.

Serbian Liturgy Brings a New Choral Work to Chicago

The world premiere of Serbian Liturgy will feature the St. Romanos Choir, conducted by Dr. Peter Jermihov.

Bishop Serafim will celebrate the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, bringing together clergy, choir members and worshippers for the occasion.

The new composition is based on the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, one of the principal worship services in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Its musical foundation comes from the Serbian chanting tradition, which has been passed down through generations of Orthodox worship.

By presenting a newly composed choral setting, the event will connect that tradition with contemporary sacred music.

The premiere also reflects the continuing role of Serbian Orthodox churches in preserving religious and musical heritage among Serbian-American communities.

Serbian-American Community Invited to Attend

Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral has invited the wider community to attend the October 18 service and premiere.

Following the liturgy, a luncheon and community gathering will take place in the cathedral’s social hall.

The gathering will provide an opportunity for parishioners and visitors to spend time together after the musical presentation.

Located in Chicago, the cathedral serves as a place of worship and a gathering point for members of the Serbian Orthodox community.

Events such as the premiere of Serbian Liturgy offer younger generations an opportunity to encounter Serbian religious traditions through music performed in the United States.

The cathedral has confirmed that everyone is welcome to attend the service and the gathering afterward.

The world premiere is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, at 10:30 a.m., at 5701 North Redwood Drive, Chicago, Illinois.
