The Ilinden Equestrian March continues its journey toward Kruševo, bringing together riders in a celebration of Macedonian history and tradition ahead of August 2, Ilinden, Republic Day.
The riders are scheduled to arrive in Veles on July 28, where they will be welcomed in the city center and pay tribute to the fighters of the Ilinden Uprising.
The march is organized by the citizens’ association “Ilinden March 1978” and follows a route from Skopje toward Kruševo.
This year marks the 48th edition of the traditional event, with around 40 riders taking part, including five women.
The participants began their journey from Gorno Lisiche on July 27 and will continue their multi day ride toward Kruševo.
Ilinden Equestrian March Reaches Veles
In Veles, the riders will be welcomed at the monument dedicated to the Veles Ilinden fighters.
A ceremony of remembrance will include the laying of fresh flowers in honor of those who took part in the historic struggle.
The stop in Veles has become an important part of the march, connecting the modern tradition with the historical places and figures associated with Ilinden.
The Municipality of Veles has previously described the event as a traditional part of the journey toward Kruševo.
Riders Continue Toward Kruševo
After the Veles ceremony, the riders will continue toward Kruševo, where they are expected to take part in the central Ilinden celebrations on August 2.
Kruševo holds a special place in the commemoration because the historic Kruševo Republic was proclaimed during the 1903 Ilinden Uprising.
August 2 is also associated with the first session of ASNOM in 1944 and is officially marked as Ilinden, Republic Day in Macedonia.
Preserving History and Tradition
The annual equestrian march is more than a journey between cities.
For its participants and supporters, it represents a way of preserving historical memory and passing traditions from one generation to another.
The route also brings the celebration directly into communities along the way, where residents can welcome the riders and take part in commemorative events.
Ilinden March Heads Toward August 2
The arrival in Veles therefore marks another important stage of a journey that will culminate in Kruševo on August 2.
As the riders continue toward the historic city, the Ilinden Equestrian March once again combines remembrance, tradition and community participation in the days leading up to one of Macedonia’s most important national holidays.
