Carles Puyol expects a fierce La Liga title race as Barcelona and Real Madrid prepare for a new season, with José Mourinho’s return adding another major storyline to Spanish football. The Barcelona legend believes Real Madrid could become stronger under Mourinho, while remaining confident that his former club has the quality and motivation to compete for another league title.
Puyol spoke positively about Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid, recalling that he first encountered the Portuguese coach during his early years at Barcelona. He said Mourinho already showed a strong understanding of football at that time and later built an impressive managerial career. Mourinho has now returned to Madrid more than a decade after his first spell at the club, signing a contract through June 2029. The former Barcelona captain nevertheless believes his old club has plenty of reasons for optimism. Barcelona are entering the campaign as two time defending La Liga champions, while Puyol highlighted the team’s hunger to continue winning. He also praised the arrival of Rodri, describing the midfielder as one of the world’s best and saying his qualities could make Barcelona’s midfield even stronger.
Mourinho’s return has already created enormous expectations at Real Madrid. The club went without a trophy for two consecutive seasons before bringing back the Portuguese coach, while also making significant changes to the squad. Mourinho previously managed Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. Puyol also praised Barcelona coach Hansi Flick and his approach, particularly the team’s high defensive line. He noted that such a system requires commitment from the entire team because failing to pressure the ball can leave defenders exposed. His comments suggest that Barcelona’s tactical identity will once again be an important part of their attempt to defend the La Liga title.
The new La Liga season therefore arrives with a familiar rivalry at its center, but with a major change on the Real Madrid bench. Mourinho’s return could give Madrid an extra edge, while Barcelona will enter the campaign looking to maintain the momentum that has brought them two consecutive league titles. Puyol’s prediction reflects the uncertainty surrounding the race, with both giants appearing capable of challenging for the trophy.
