Kraljevo Mourns Five Year Old Girl Killed in Tragic Traffic Accident

The city of Kraljevo is mourning the death of a five year old girl who died after suffering serious injuries in a traffic accident earlier this week. The tragedy has deeply affected the local community, with residents leaving flowers, candles and children’s toys near the scene of the crash. The girl died on August 25 from injuries sustained in the accident, which happened Monday evening on Fourth Kraljevo Battalion Street. A vehicle reportedly collided with another car before leaving the road and hitting pedestrians on a pedestrian and bicycle path.

The young girl suffered life threatening injuries and was taken for medical treatment, but doctors were unable to save her. Her 32 year old mother and one year old sister, who was in a stroller, also suffered serious injuries, while her father sustained minor injuries. A passenger in one of the vehicles was also injured. Police arrested a 26 year old man from Kraljevo in connection with the crash. Authorities say he did not have a valid driver’s license and is suspected of driving a Seat when he collided with a Volkswagen while overtaking. The vehicle then left the road, crossed onto the pedestrian and bicycle path, hit a tree and struck the pedestrians.

The suspect was placed in custody for up to 48 hours and is expected to appear before the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Kraljevo. He is facing a criminal investigation over suspected serious violations of traffic safety. The accident has also raised concerns among local residents, with reports that people had previously complained about speeding and dangerous driving in the area. Some residents say they had repeatedly warned authorities about reckless drivers, leading to renewed questions about road safety and whether stronger measures could have prevented the tragedy.

Kraljevo will officially observe Thursday, August 27, as a Day of Mourning, coinciding with the girl’s funeral. During the day, Serbian and city flags will be lowered to half mast, while public, cultural, musical and sporting events are expected to adjust their programs in accordance with mourning regulations. The funeral will take place at the Old Cemetery in Kraljevo, where residents are expected to gather to say goodbye to the child. For the city, the tragedy has brought profound grief while also highlighting concerns about reckless driving and road safety. As Kraljevo mourns, the death of the young girl has become a painful reminder of the importance of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
