U.S. Summer Box Office Sets New Record With $4.76 Billion in Revenue

The U.S. summer movie season has reached a historic milestone, generating $4.76 billion in domestic box office revenue between May 1 and September 7, according to data from Rentrak. The result narrowly surpassed the previous summer record of $4.755 billion, set in 2013 when major releases including Iron Man 3, Despicable Me 2 and Man of Steel helped drive ticket sales. The new record is particularly significant for the movie industry because it comes after several difficult years for cinemas, as audiences gradually return to theaters and major releases once again attract large crowds.

This year’s result also came with some important differences compared with the previous record. The 2026 summer season lasted 130 days, compared with 123 days in 2013, partly because of the timing of the U.S. Labor Day holiday. The earlier record also has not been adjusted for inflation, meaning that the comparison does not represent exactly the same purchasing power. Even with those factors taken into account, the performance represents a major boost for theaters. For the first time, each of the four main summer months generated more than $1 billion in ticket sales. May brought in $1.07 billion, June reached $1.08 billion, July generated $1.18 billion and August became the strongest month with $1.27 billion.

Several major releases played an important role in the strong performance. Spider Man: Brand New Day became one of the biggest successes of the season, generating approximately $923 million in North America and $2.4 billion worldwide according to the figures reported by Euronews. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was another major performer, earning $589 million in North America and $1.62 billion globally. The summer also benefited from established franchises such as Toy Story 5 and The Devil Wears Prada 2, alongside unexpected hits that gained popularity among younger audiences, including Obsession and Backrooms.

The strong summer season could prove important for the future of movie theaters, particularly because the industry has been working to rebuild regular cinema attendance after the disruption caused by the pandemic. Rentrak market trends director Paul Dergarabedian said the importance of the record goes beyond the revenue itself, arguing that the season reminded audiences of the experience of going to a movie theater. The summer box office has now exceeded $4 billion only for the second time since the pandemic, following 2023, when the Barbie and Oppenheimer phenomenon helped push seasonal revenue to $4.09 billion. With several major releases still expected, the latest figures suggest that the theatrical movie business may be entering a stronger period after years of uncertainty.
