Public transportation across Zagreb was severely disrupted Monday as ZET workers went on strike, while employees responsible for municipal services also stopped working.
The strike began early Monday morning after months of unsuccessful negotiations over new collective agreements. The main dispute centers on wages and the proposed increase to the base salary rate.
With most ZET employees remaining in the garages, tram and bus services were largely halted across the Croatian capital, leaving many residents to find alternative ways to get to work and school.
The strike also affected municipal services, with workers responsible for cleaning and maintaining public areas joining the industrial action.
The unions had reduced their demand for an increase in the base salary rate to 13 percent, while management maintained an offer of 4.5 percent, along with a provision to adjust the base rate to consumer-price growth beginning in 2027.
The collective agreements expired in March. Despite months of negotiations, a conciliation process and final talks over the weekend, the two sides failed to reach an agreement.
