Gorana Dance in New York is marking its 20th anniversary, celebrating two decades of Bulgarian folk dance, cultural heritage and community connections in the United States.
The Bulgarian Cultural Center of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware recently recognized the group’s anniversary and its contribution to Bulgarian traditions.
Founded by choreographer and artistic director Elissaveta Iordanova, Gorana Dance has brought Bulgarian folklore to audiences across the United States.
The anniversary highlights the group’s role in connecting generations through traditional dance and cultural activities.
Gorana Dance Celebrates Two Decades in New York
Gorana Dance organized a special anniversary performance titled “Water & Wheat” for October 3, 2026.
The event was scheduled at The Riverside Theatre in New York City.
According to the group’s official website, the anniversary celebration focused on the traditions, memories and cultural connections developed over two decades.
Iordanova has led the ensemble’s artistic work, combining traditional Bulgarian dances with original choreography.
The group has also welcomed participants from different cultural backgrounds.
Over the years, its activities have included performances, workshops and opportunities to learn Bulgarian folk dances.
Radio Bulgaria reported that more than 60 dancers had participated in the group’s performances during its history.
Hundreds of others have taken part in classes and workshops.
Preserving Bulgarian Heritage Across Generations
Gorana Dance has become part of the Bulgarian cultural community in New York.
Its work introduces audiences to the rhythms, costumes and regional dance traditions of Bulgaria.
The ensemble also encourages younger generations to explore their cultural heritage through performance and education.
In August 2026, Iordanova received the Paisius of Hilendar commemorative medal from Bulgaria’s Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad.
The recognition honored her contribution to preserving and promoting Bulgarian folklore in the United States.
The group’s 20th anniversary reflects the continuing efforts of Bulgarian-American cultural organizations to maintain connections with their heritage.
