Luka Dončić is embracing a new leadership role with the Los Angeles Lakers, bringing his teammates to his hometown of Ljubljana, Slovenia, as the team prepares for the 2026–27 NBA season.
In an extensive interview with Sports Illustrated, the Slovenian basketball superstar discussed his career, personal roots and ambitions for the Lakers.
The visit to Slovenia was designed to strengthen relationships within a team that underwent significant changes during the offseason.
Luka Dončić Hosts Lakers Teammates in Slovenia
In August, Dončić organized a four-day minicamp in Ljubljana, bringing together several Lakers players for basketball sessions and activities away from the court.
The gathering included practices, dinners, golf, a traditional Balkan barbecue and visits to local landmarks.
According to Sports Illustrated, Dončić personally covered the expenses.
The event gave teammates an opportunity to develop stronger relationships ahead of the new season.
“It was important to get to know each other,” Dončić told the magazine.
The gathering came as the Lakers adjusted to a new roster following LeBron James’s departure.
Dončić has become the central figure in the team’s plans, with Los Angeles building its roster around his playing style.
The Slovenian star also reflected on his childhood in Ljubljana, where he developed his basketball skills on neighborhood courts.
Years later, he helped renovate those same courts, providing improved facilities for local children.
Lakers Look to Dončić for Leadership and Success
Dončić enters the new season following another outstanding individual campaign.
According to Sports Illustrated, he averaged 33.5 points per game last season and earned his sixth All-NBA First Team selection.
However, a hamstring injury ended his season prematurely and prevented him from helping the Lakers during the remainder of their playoff campaign.
The experience has influenced his preparations for the upcoming season.
The Lakers have strengthened their roster with players expected to complement Dončić’s offensive abilities.
Among the additions discussed in the interview are Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes and Sandro Mamukelashvili.
Head coach JJ Redick believes Dončić can develop further, particularly as a leader.
For Dončić, the connection to Slovenia remains an important part of his identity, even as his responsibilities in Los Angeles continue to grow.
His decision to host teammates in Ljubljana reflects an effort to combine those roots with his ambitions for the Lakers.
