Kosovo has asked the United States to restart strategic talks and support its efforts to join NATO. The requests came during meetings with US Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin.
The two senators visited Kosovo as part of a congressional trip to the Western Balkans.
Kosovo’s President Justina Shiroka-Pula called for the return of formal talks between Pristina and Washington.
She said stronger cooperation with the United States could help Kosovo advance its security goals.
Kosovo Calls for Renewed US Strategic Dialogue
The United States suspended its strategic dialogue with Kosovo in September 2025.
At the time, the US Embassy in Pristina raised concerns about actions by Kosovo’s government toward Serbian institutions.
American officials said those actions had increased tensions and made cooperation more difficult.
Kosovo’s leaders now want to restore that channel of communication.
President Shiroka-Pula also identified NATO membership as a major foreign policy goal.
Kurti Seeks US Support for NATO Membership
Prime Minister Albin Kurti raised Kosovo’s NATO ambitions during his meeting with the senators.
He also asked for support to turn Camp Bondsteel, the American military installation in Kosovo, into a permanent US base.
Kurti expressed concern about Serbia’s actions and statements. His remarks reflect continuing disagreements between Belgrade and Pristina over security and political issues.
The US congressional delegation visited several Balkan countries between October 6 and 13.
According to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the trip focused on regional security, democratic institutions and relations with Washington.
The visit also covered NATO cooperation and economic opportunities in the region.
Kosovo’s requests place its relationship with the United States back on the regional diplomatic agenda.
