Macedonian Community Rallies Behind Lyons Mayor Chris Getty at Congressional Fundraiser

Chriss Getty, Mayor of Lyons, running for a Congress

Macedonian food, live music, and a strong sense of community filled the campaign headquarters of Chris Getty on October 17, as Macedonians from the Chicago area and suburbs gathered to show their support for the Mayor of Lyons in his campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.

The event brought together members of the Macedonian community who wanted to express their appreciation for Getty’s longstanding relationship with Macedonians in Illinois and his support for the people of Macedonia during a difficult time.

Getty, who has served as mayor of Lyons since 2009, is running as an independent candidate in Illinois’ 4th Congressional District in the November 2026 election.

A Friendship Built on Support for Kochani

Getty’s connection with the Macedonian community extends beyond local events and celebrations. One of the defining moments of that relationship came after the devastating nightclub fire in Kochani, North Macedonia, in March 2025, which killed dozens of people and left many others injured.

Lyons and Kochani share a sister-city relationship, creating a special connection between the Illinois suburb and the Macedonian town. Following the tragedy, Getty traveled to Kochani to demonstrate support and help those affected by the disaster.

His involvement during that difficult period made a lasting impression on many Macedonians in the Chicago area, strengthening the bond between the mayor and the community.

For those attending the October 17 gathering, the fundraiser was an opportunity to return that support and recognize a relationship built on solidarity and friendship.

Macedonian Food, Music, and Community Spirit

The evening reflected the warmth and hospitality of Macedonian culture. Guests gathered over traditional Macedonian food and enjoyed live Macedonian music, creating an atmosphere that combined community celebration with support for Getty’s congressional campaign.

Macedonians from across the Chicago area came together to contribute to the fundraiser, offer encouragement, and show their appreciation for his connection with their community.

Getty greeted attendees, addressed the gathering, and thanked everyone who came to support him. His remarks acknowledged the people who had taken the time to join him and contribute to the evening’s efforts.

From Local Friendship to a Congressional Campaign

For many attendees, the gathering represented more than a political fundraiser. It was also an expression of gratitude toward a local leader who had maintained close ties with the Macedonian community and shown support for people facing hardship overseas.

As Getty campaigns for a seat in Congress, the October 17 event demonstrated the participation of Macedonian-Americans in the political life of their community and their willingness to support a candidate with whom they have developed a longstanding relationship.

The evening brought together culture, friendship, and civic engagement, highlighting the connections that can develop between local leaders and immigrant communities through shared experiences and mutual support.

First Balkan Media was there to capture the gathering, the music, and the Macedonian community’s show of support for Chris Getty.
