More Than Fashion: Macedonian Community Unites for Breast Cancer Support in Northwest Indiana

An annual fashion show hosted by Sts. Peter and Paul Macedonian Orthodox Cathedral brought together hundreds of women from across the region for an event where fashion took a back seat to something far more meaningful: supporting those affected by breast cancer.

Now in its 13th year, the fundraiser welcomes approximately 350 to 420 attendees annually, bringing together members of the Macedonian and broader Balkan communities to celebrate survivors, honor loved ones, and support those still fighting the disease.

A Vogue-Inspired Afternoon of Fashion and Prizes.

This year’s fashion show embraced a Vogue-inspired theme, bringing elegance, glamour, and style to the gathering. Attendees arrived dressed to impress, adding their own fashionable touches and creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a high-fashion celebration.

Alongside the runway presentations, guests enjoyed a lottery featuring a selection of beautiful gifts, giving some lucky ladies the chance to take home special prizes.

The combination of stylish outfits, exciting giveaways, and the warm spirit of the Macedonian community made the event both entertaining and meaningful. While the fashion and festivities brought excitement to the day, the fundraiser’s central mission remained the same: supporting breast cancer patients and survivors, honoring loved ones, and standing beside those still fighting the disease.

First Balkan Media spoke with Melissa Zezovski, the event’s head chairperson, about the planning behind the show, its community impact, and the personal stories that make the event so special.

Months of Planning, a Community Effort

Although the fashion show takes place once a year, organizing it requires months of preparation. According to Zezovski, planning for this year’s event began in April.

A committee of approximately 15 people works together to develop the concept, brainstorm ideas, and select the theme. The process involves plenty of discussion before the group settles on a final direction.

Last year’s theme was Pearls and Prosecco. Each year, organizers look for ways to keep the event fresh, engaging, and meaningful for attendees.

Every Woman Has a Reason to Walk

One of the most touching elements of the fashion show is its interactive runway.

Rather than relying exclusively on traditional models, organizers invite each table to choose a woman to represent the group on the runway. For many participants, walking is much more than a fashion moment.

Some women walk in honor of their own breast cancer journeys. Others represent a mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, or loved one who has faced the disease.

Melissa recalled the emotional moments that make the event unforgettable, including a woman who walked the runway celebrating that she had beaten cancer.

Other participants have approached the organizers in tears, explaining that they wanted to walk in memory of a grandmother who had died from breast cancer.

“Everyone walks for something,” is the message behind this personal and meaningful tradition.

The runway becomes a place where stories are honored, courage is celebrated, and women can show their support for people whose struggles may not always be visible.

Helping Women Beyond the Runway

The fundraiser’s mission extends well beyond the event itself.

A portion of the proceeds goes toward helping people in the community affected by breast cancer. Assistance can include purchasing wigs and providing transportation to chemotherapy appointments, as well as financial help with other needs.

The goal is to offer practical support during an already difficult time, ensuring that people facing cancer know their community is standing beside them.

Zezovski also explained that many women in the Macedonian and wider Balkan communities prefer to keep their cancer experiences private. While some survivors openly share their stories to encourage others and raise awareness, others choose not to speak publicly about their experiences.

For that reason, organizers do not maintain a public list of survivors. Respecting people’s privacy remains important.

A Community United by Compassion

With hundreds of women attending each year, the annual fashion show has become more than a fundraiser. It is a gathering that brings generations together through friendship, remembrance, resilience, and solidarity.

Behind every runway appearance may be a personal victory, a tribute to someone who is no longer here, or a message of hope for someone currently undergoing treatment.

Through the dedication of its organizing committee and the generosity of its attendees, Sts. Peter and Paul Macedonian Orthodox Cathedral continues to create a space where fashion meets a meaningful cause.

For the women who walk, the families who attend, and those who receive assistance, the message is clear: no one should have to face breast cancer alone.

First Balkan Media was there to capture the gathering, the fashion, and the community spirit behind an event dedicated to making a difference.
