US First Lady Melania Trump has announced an expansion of a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Kherson region, allowing humanitarian convoys to reach civilians trapped by years of war. The agreement represents a significant humanitarian development in an area where residents have faced severe shortages of food, medicine and clean water.
The localized ceasefire began on October 27 in and around Oleshky, a Russian-controlled Ukrainian town near the Dnipro River. The arrangement was negotiated with American involvement, including efforts by the first lady and her representatives.
Melania Trump said the agreement had been implemented earlier than initially planned and expanded beyond Oleshky to facilitate the delivery of essential supplies.
“Timing was accelerated two days ahead of schedule to protect the safety of civilians and to facilitate the delivery of critical humanitarian aid,” she wrote on X.
She also confirmed that the ceasefire area had expanded within the Kherson region to provide safer passage for humanitarian convoys.
US-Brokered Agreement Offers Relief to Civilians
Oleshky has been under Russian control since the early stages of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Its population has fallen dramatically as fighting, destruction and shortages have forced residents to leave.
According to estimates released by the White House, approximately 1,700 to 2,000 people remain in the town, compared with around 24,000 before the war.
Many remaining residents are elderly, while dozens of children are also believed to be living in the area.
The temporary ceasefire is intended to allow humanitarian organizations to deliver food, drinking water and medical supplies while providing evacuation routes for civilians wishing to leave.
Russian and Ukrainian officials reported that the localized truce was holding during its initial implementation, although the arrangement does not represent a nationwide ceasefire.
Melania Trump’s Role in Humanitarian Diplomacy
The White House previously confirmed that Melania Trump helped coordinate the agreement with representatives of both Russia and Ukraine.
Her involvement follows earlier humanitarian efforts concerning Ukrainian children separated from their families during the war.
The ceasefire also comes as Washington continues diplomatic efforts to bring Russian and Ukrainian representatives back to negotiations.
The two countries have discussed further US-supported talks, with potential meetings expected in November.
For civilians in Oleshky, the immediate priority remains access to essential supplies and safe evacuation.
The agreement offers a temporary opportunity for humanitarian relief, while the broader conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues.
