The US economy may have grown at a faster pace in the third quarter of 2026. Strong consumer spending and major investments in artificial intelligence helped support business activity, economists say.

A Reuters survey forecasts annualized economic growth of 3.2% for July through September. That would mark an increase from the 2.2% growth recorded in the second quarter.

The Commerce Department is scheduled to release its first official estimate on Thursday, October 29.

What Is Driving US Economic Growth?

Consumer spending remains one of the main drivers of the US economy. Americans continue to spend on goods and services despite higher energy prices.

Economists expect consumer spending to have grown at an annual rate above 3% during the third quarter.

Meanwhile, companies have invested heavily in artificial intelligence. Businesses are buying computer equipment and building the systems needed to support new technology.

These investments have helped support economic activity. However, much of the equipment comes from overseas.

As a result, rising imports may have reduced the overall growth figure.

The US economy also faces pressure from high borrowing costs. Mortgage rates have made buying a home more expensive for many families.

Still, business investment and consumer spending appear to have kept growth moving forward.

What Does the Forecast Mean for American Families?

A stronger economy can support jobs, wages and business opportunities. However, economic growth does not always mean families immediately feel better off.

Many Americans continue to face high prices for food, gasoline and housing.

In addition, some households have used their savings to cover everyday expenses. This raises questions about how long consumer spending can remain strong.

The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate between 3.75% and 4% on Wednesday. Officials said inflation remains above their target.

Economists will now watch the new GDP report for signs of continued growth.

For American households, including families from the Balkan diaspora, the key question is whether a growing economy will eventually bring more financial stability.

The official figures will show whether the third quarter matched economists’ expectations.
