Apple Reportedly Developing Home Robots, Including a Machine That Can Fold Laundry

Apple is reportedly exploring a new generation of home robots, including an ambitious machine designed to fold laundry, as the technology giant considers expanding into the growing home robotics market.

Other concepts being explored by the iPhone maker include a wheeled robot that can follow users from room to room and an indoor flying device, according to a report by The Information.

There is no indication that these experimental products will eventually be released to consumers. However, one of the rumored devices is said to be an advanced version of Apple’s recently unveiled HomeView hub.

A prototype, reportedly referred to as the HomeView Ultra or HomeView Max, features a nine-inch display mounted on a swiveling robotic arm.

According to the report, the current design uses cameras and sensors to monitor its surroundings and respond autonomously. For example, it could turn on the lights when someone enters a room — or perhaps even attempt to tell a cat to get off a table.

Former Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted last year that the company was preparing to introduce products in several new categories.

“The product pipeline, which I can’t talk about, it’s amazing, guys. It’s amazing,” Cook said during an all-hands meeting with employees.

“Some of it you’ll see soon. Some of it will come later. But there’s a lot to see.”

Apple has a history of pursuing ambitious projects that ultimately never reach the market. One of the most notable examples was its self-driving electric car, developed under the Project Titan initiative.

The technology giant reportedly spent more than $10 billion on research and development over a decade before abandoning the project in 2024.

However, Apple has already designed and built several operational robots, although they have been used internally rather than sold to consumers.

One of the first was Liam, a 29-armed robotic system designed to dismantle old iPhones and recover valuable materials that conventional recycling methods can overlook.

In 2018, Apple introduced its successor, Daisy. The newer robot can disassemble a wider range of iPhone models and process up to 200 devices per hour.

While Apple’s latest robotics concepts remain experimental, the reported projects suggest the company is exploring ways to bring robotics and artificial intelligence into everyday household life.
