2026 US Midterms Make History: First Black Woman Governor and First Muslim Senator Elected

The 2026 US midterm elections produced a series of historic firsts in American politics, including the election of the country’s first Black woman governor, its first Muslim senator and its first Native American woman governor. Democrats also made significant gains across the country.

The victories came during an election night marked by major setbacks for Republicans and President Donald Trump, as Democrats regained control of both chambers of Congress.

Bill Shiebler, strategy director at State Voices, a nonprofit network of organizations promoting civic participation and equality, described the election results as a “strong rejection of hate and division,” according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“We are witnessing an electorate that increasingly sees itself reflected in its leaders, as well as leaders emerging from the communities they now represent,” Shiebler said.

First Muslim elected to the US Senate

In Michigan, progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed made history by becoming the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate.

The former public health administrator attracted large crowds during his campaign but faced a wave of anti-Muslim rhetoric from political opponents during a closely contested race.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) praised El-Sayed for persevering despite what it described as “endless Islamophobic attacks.”

“Our communities worked hard to ensure that our voices were heard and that we were properly represented in the Senate,” the organization said.

“This is what is possible when we come together and vote.”

Historic victories across the country

In Georgia, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won the gubernatorial race, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state.

The former mayor of Atlanta defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson, returning the governor’s office to Democratic control after more than two decades of Republican leadership.

Democratic Congressman Chris Pappas also made history in New Hampshire, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the US Senate. Pappas has served in the House of Representatives since 2019.

“No one should be discriminated against because of who they are or who they love,” he states on his website.

In New Mexico, Democrat Deb Haaland became the first Native American woman elected governor, defeating Republican Gregg Hull.

A member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, Haaland previously served as secretary of the interior under former President Joe Biden. She was also the first Native American to serve as a US cabinet secretary.

Another milestone came in Minnesota, where Democrat Peggy Flanagan was elected to the US Senate, becoming the first Native American woman to serve in the chamber. Flanagan is a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe.

Texas also made history with Democrat Gina Hinojosa’s victory over Republican incumbent Greg Abbott. Hinojosa became the first Latina elected governor of Texas.

More historic milestones ahead

The election also produced historic results at the state level, with candidates from underrepresented communities winning some of the country’s highest political offices.

In the new Congress, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries could make history if elected Speaker of the House. He would become the first Black politician to hold the position.

“These were historic elections in which people decided to believe in themselves and turn toward the hope that comes from the promise of this country, rejecting the attempt to silence their voices,” Shiebler said.

The 2026 midterms marked a significant moment in American political representation, with historic breakthroughs in state leadership and the US Senate alongside a major shift in the balance of power in Washington.
