Republican Byron Donalds has won Florida’s 2026 gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black Republican governor in American history and delivering a significant victory for President Donald Trump’s political allies.
The result marks a historic milestone for Florida and provides Republicans with a major statewide success despite Democratic gains across the country in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Donalds, a former US congressman and prominent Trump supporter, will succeed Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who was unable to seek another consecutive term.
His victory also underscores Florida’s continued importance as a Republican stronghold at a time when the party is facing electoral setbacks elsewhere.
A Historic Victory for Florida Republicans
Donalds rose to national prominence as a Republican congressman representing Southwest Florida, becoming a familiar voice in conservative politics and a vocal defender of Trump’s agenda.
His political career has been closely associated with Republican priorities, including immigration enforcement, economic policy and reducing federal regulation.
Trump endorsed Donalds during the gubernatorial campaign, giving him the backing of one of the Republican Party’s most influential figures.
The election result represents a personal achievement for Donalds and a symbolic milestone for Black Republicans seeking higher political office.
Although Black Americans have previously served as governors, Donalds is the first Black Republican elected to lead a US state.
His victory adds another chapter to Florida’s political history and places him among the Republican Party’s most prominent state-level leaders.
Florida Delivers a Republican Win Amid Democratic Gains
The Florida result stands in sharp contrast to the broader national election picture.
Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, defeating Republican candidates in several traditionally conservative states.
In Texas, Democrats won the governorship and a US Senate seat, while Republican candidates also suffered significant losses in other states.
Florida, however, remained an important source of electoral success for the GOP.
Alongside Donalds’ gubernatorial victory, Republican Senator Ashley Moody won her election, allowing the party to retain the Senate seat she had held since her appointment in 2025.
For Trump, the two Florida victories offer positive results from an otherwise difficult election night.
The president has acknowledged the Democratic victories nationwide while emphasizing his willingness to negotiate with the incoming congressional majorities.
Donalds is expected to take office in January 2027, beginning a new chapter in Florida’s Republican leadership.
His administration will inherit responsibility for one of the nation’s most populous states, with economic development, housing affordability and immigration among the major issues facing Florida residents.
